Frequently Asked Questions

What is da Vinci robotic surgery?

You’ve just been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery. Until very recently your options included traditional surgery with a large open incision or laparoscopy, which uses small incisions but is typically limited to very simple procedures.

Thanks to a breakthrough surgical technology, there is a new category of minimally invasive surgery for which you may be a candidate. It is an effective, minimally invasive alternative to both open surgery and laparoscopy. Through the use of the da Vinci® Surgical System, surgeons are now able to offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures.

Imagine major surgery performed through the smallest of incisions. Imagine having the benefits of a definitive treatment but with the potential for significantly less pain, a shorter hospital stay, faster return to normal daily activities – as well as the potential for better clinical outcomes.

The da Vinci robotic surgery represents the most advanced technology with respect to surgical techniques.

What surgeries can be performed using the system?

The da Vinci surgical system can be used to perform the following gynecologic surgeries:

  • Hysterectomy
  • Myomectomy
  • Sacrocolpopexy
What benefits can I have by undergoing robotic surgery?

The da Vinci surgical system has many benefits for the patients because of the type of incisions and the precision of the technology. You can expect the following benefits:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Less scarring
  • Potentially better clinical outcome
What is the recovery time after a da Vinci robotic surgery?

Since the surgery involves smaller skin incisions, the hospital stay and recovery are much shorter than open surgery. You should be able to leave the hospital in 1 to 2 days and return to your usual activities 2 to 3 weeks following the procedure.

What is vaginal rejuvenation procedure?

Vaginal rejuvenation is a procedure which includes surgical correction of vaginal mucosa and pelvic floor muscles what ultimately leads to an increased rugae of the surface of the vagina and overall a tighter vagina. The procedures can be performed using CO2 laser as well as placement of sutures in the posterior aspect of vaginal walls.

Many women experience vaginal relaxation due to childbirth or aging. This results in decreased friction or stimulation during intercourse leading to decreased sexual gratification. Vaginal rejuvenation addresses this common complaint by decreasing the internal and external vaginal diameter while increasing vaginal muscle tone and strength.

Who is a candidate for vaginal rejuvenation?

Any woman who considers her vagina opening or the whole length of the structure to loose. This may occur as a result of vaginal deliveries, genetic factors or simply because of aging process

What symptoms are leading to decision for vaginal rejuvenation?

Women who may consider the procedure may have the following symptoms:

  • Feeling of a loose vagina with minimal muscle tone
  • Decreased sensation and stimulation during intercourse
  • A increased vaginal opening unpleasing in appearance
  • Tampons falling out
  • Tissue protruding from their vagina
  • Problems passing bowel movements
  • Scar tissue surrounding the opening of the vagina or inside the vagina causing pain
  • Scar tissue at the opening of the vagina which causing pain during intercourse.
What is the recovery time after vaginal rejuvenation?

The recovery will depend on the extend of the initial defect and the type of procedure performed such as laser vaginal rejuvenation and/or tightening of pelvic floor muscles.

In case of an extendive tightening of vaginal walls, the recovery time can be longer. Generally is between 6-8 weeks. A full resumption of physical activity can be expected to be up to 8 weeks after the surgery

How is pain controlled following the surgery?

After surgery you will receive oral pain medication of different strength to ameliorate your pain. Ice packs should be used for 48 hours in alternating fashion every 30-40 min to decrease the degree of swelling. Wearing loose clothes is aso recommended.I case of more extensive surgery or if desired, a pain control pump can be used

What is a perineoplasty procedure?

Perineoplasty is a plastic gynecological procedure which is performed to transform the vaginal opening (introitus) into a smaller and tighter area. This is achieved by reaproximating relaxed muscles in this area and adjustment/trimming of excessive skin, if needed. The procedure may need to be performed in association with a scar revision caused by prior vaginal deliveries or any trauma to the vaginal introitus.

What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a corrective procedure of labia minora (inner lip) or labia majora (outer lip) which can be performed to enhance a more ecstatically pleasing appearance of the structures or to eliminate many symptoms and/or medical conditions. The most common type of procedure is to decrease the size and/or reshape the labia structure. Occasionally if there is asymmetry present, one labia may be trimmed to provide more acceptable appearance.

Statistics reveal that 1/3 of women have the procedure performed for aesthetic indications, 1/3 for medical , and the remaining 1/3 for both.

Who is a candidate for the procedure?

Surgical correction of labia minora or majora abnormalities is an established procedure for women who are not satisfied with the appearance of their external genitalia or have certain medical conditions. If any of these occur, any woman can seek labiaplasty procedure. Frequently, enlarged or anatomically altered  labia minora or majora may contribute to recurrent urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, pain during intercourse, or lack of confidence. All of above can be discussed with the physician to address the concerns.

Are there different techniques to perform labiaplasty?

Yes essentially there are many different techniques to perform the procedure. All surgical options will be discussed during your initial consultation. This will mainly depend on the desire to retain the natural pigment of the labia edges or a new pink color. In patients who desire a natural look, a wedge technique is utilized.

What is clitoral hodectomy?

Clitoral hood  (prepuce) is a skin tissue covering the female clitoris. Some women may have to long or wide tissue overlying the hood which may lead to collection of secretions and frequent infections ot may affect sexual experience.
The procedure includes  removal of excess skin to partially expose the clotoris.

Can clitoral hodectomy it be performed in conjunction with other procedures? Usually is performed in conjunction with labiaplasty.

What is the recovery time after labiaplasty?

It will depend on the extend and type of the procedure and if it was performed in conjunction with other surgeries such as vaginal rejuvenation.

Most patients may resume routine daily activities 48 hours after the surgery and return to work 1 week after the procedure. It usually takes 6-8 weeks for the sutures to reabsorbe. Physical exercise or strenous activity may ne resumed 4 weeks after labiaplasty.

When can I have sexual activity?

Sexual activity can be resumed 6 weeks after the procedure but some patients may need longer recovery time, up to 8 weeks. The sutures usually dissolve in 6 weeks, although in some patients it can take longer, up to 12 weeks.

Is laser required to perform the procedure?

Laser is not always required to perform the procedure, It will depend on the complexity of the procedure and to a certain extend patient preference.

Am I going to see scarring?

Scar formation is different in each patient, the width of the scar which is formed after the procedure usually is not visible 8-10 weeks after the procedure.

Is large labia considered for a surgical correction?

Yes the outer lips (labia majora) is very frequently a problem in our patients, regardless of age. The main reason is a large labia with excess, loose skin due to an aging process and hence loss of adipose tissue and loss of skin elastivity.

Each finding willbe individually adressed and sergery tailored to patient’s needs.

What corrective surgery is done for labia majora?

The procedure involves an inner incision, followed by reshaping of the size of the labia after removal of excess skin. In certain circumstances, fat transfer can be performed to augment the shape of the structure. Occasionally there is an increased amount of adipose (fat) tissue which needs to be aspirated.
